Organ playing in protestant services in the periode 1938-1960 – Part 1: Independent organ playing during and around the service (Jan Smelik)

In 2019/2020 the author wrote for Het Orgel a series of articles on the use of the organ in protestant services between 1886 and 1938.  In this issue he begins a sequel covering the post-war period.  In this first article he sketches the practice of hymn singing, so far as this is relevant to the liturgical use of the organ.  The article continues with organ playing before and after the service, during the collection, and after the sermon.
