In the second part, those variation sets are treated in which about half of the text is represented by ‘non-functional alternatim’, i.e. alternatim for non-liturgical ends. The remaining sets are also briefly discussed.
Using her analyses, the author gives a possible explanation for the fact that Sweelinck follows the text in the variations on Lutheran tunes, but not the Calvinistic ones. She also makes suggestions concerning the performance of Sweelinck’s sacred variation sets.
