In the March 2026 issue of the British journal Organists’ Review, Martin Schmeding, who teaches organ performance at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater ‘Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’ in Leipzig, published his article ‘Fugenpassion – Reflections on a major project in Robert Schumann’s oeuvre’. It deals with a crucial chapter in Schumann’s compositional life: the year 1845, when an intensive return to counterpoint and a growing fascination with the organ would permanently transform his compositional style.
