Mende, the capital of the département of Lozère, possesses a Romanesque cathedral that serves as the episcopal church of the Diocese of Mende, dating from the fourteenth century. The church is dedicated to Saint Privat, the first to preach the Gospel in the Gévaudan region of Roman Gaul and its patron saint, who died around AD 260. An organ is documented from as early as the fifteenth century; it was renewed in 1463 and again in 1518, and was destroyed by the Huguenots in 1581.
