The Assendelft Organ in the Stevenskerk, Nijmegen

The article describes the history and recent restoration of the house organ in the southern chapel of the Stevenskerk in Nijmegen. In 1988, national adviser Onno Wiersma identified the instrument as a work of the Leiden organ builder Pieter Assendelft (1714–1766). The restoration was carried out in 2023–2024 by the organ builders Elbertse, Van Vulpen, and Verschueren. In addition to the instrument’s history, the article covers the biography of Assendelft and his sons Johannes and Samuel, who continued the organ-building workshop. Gerrit Hoving and Wietse Ouwejan visited the instrument and recorded their findings, which appear after Van Dijk’s article.
