Jean-Jacques Grunenwald: In the Shadow of La Jeune France (Part 2 – Conclusion)

This concluding part examines the organ music of Jean-Jacques Grunenwald (1911–1982) from the 1950s onward. Grunenwald, who succeeded Marcel Dupré as organist of Saint-Sulpice in Paris in 1973, is analysed through his later compositions, with particular attention to the ‘Diptique liturgique’ (1956), written for the centenary of St. James’ Episcopal Church in New York. The two parts of this work – ‘Preces’ and ‘Jubilate Deo’ – illustrate Grunenwald’s approach to liturgical organ music.
