Many readers will have a clear idea of what a French Baroque organ is like. Terms such as Plein jeu, Tierce en taille and Basse de Trompette instantly evoke a particular sound world. Similarly, the North German Baroque organ is firmly embedded in the collective memory of most organists; an organ of the Arp Schnitger type requires no further explanation. The situation is different, however, when it comes to the English Baroque organ. We may know and even play some Old English organ music, but what kind of instruments was this music actually performed on? At Peterhouse Chapel, Cambridge, there is now an instrument that offers a reliable glimpse into the past while also serving as a practical modern organ. Organ builders Flentrop and Klais were responsible for the renovation, which was completed in 2023.
