In memoriam Jürgen Ahrend

On 9 August, a Trauergottesdienst was held at the Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche in Leer-Loga to honor Jürgen Ahrend, the renowned organ builder who passed away on 1 August at the age of 94. The service, led by Ingo Brookmann, highlighted the significance of organs in sustaining worship and praise. Wolfgang Zerer provided musical accompaniment, performing works by Tunder and Bach on the 1969 Ahrend & Brunzema organ, later expanded by Hendrik Ahrend.

Jürgen Ahrend achieved international acclaim for his work in organ restoration and construction. The firm he founded in 1954 with Gerhard Brunzema became known for innovations, including the reintroduction of meantone tuning and the integration of historical tonal ideals with modern techniques. Ahrend & Brunzema crafted over 40 organs and completed landmark restorations, including those in Norden, Stade, and Groningen’s Martinikerk.

After Brunzema’s departure in 1971, Ahrend continued leading the firm independently, expanding its reach internationally with projects in Scotland, France, Japan, and other countries. Ahrend’s artistry and commitment to quality established him as one of the most influential organ builders of the twentieth century, and his instruments continue to inspire organists worldwide.
