In post-war France, various organ projects were completed after years of preparation. Although the term ‘reconstruction’ was frequently used, this did not imply a restoration to an instrument’s original state. Rather, new organs were created using surviving pipework, with the aim of producing instruments capable of performing the entire (French) repertoire. A few examples may illustrate this: Paris, Saint-Merry (1947, combining pipework by Clicquot, Cavaillé-Coll and Gonzalez); Dijon, Cathédrale Saint-Bénigne (1955, incorporating material by Riepp, Ducroquet, Merklin and Roethinger); and Paris, Saint-Étienne-du-Mont (1956, drawing on the work of various organ builders from Le Pescheur to Cavaillé-Coll, completed by Beuchet-Debierre).
