Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Olieverfschilderij uit 1846 van Eduard Magnus (1799-1872)

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s influence was not limited to Germany. Many students at the conservatory in Leipzig, which the composer founded in 1843, came from foreign countries and returned after their studies to their original countries. Besides England, France and Belgium there were many students from the Netherlands in Leipzig. This article has three parts. The second part is about Dutch students at the conservatory in Leipzig in 1843-1847, among them Jan Albert van Eijken.  Clement describes how pupils of Mendelssohn Bartholdy were important for renewed interest in the organ and for the (organ) music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
